Ohio State Buckeyes Fans are Chanting "Boomer Sooners"

By Douglas L Brown

A little over three weeks ago, the entire state of Ohio was shocked when an upstart Illinois football team came into Columbus and shocked the then number one ranked Buckeyes in the 'Shoe. It seemed at the time that there would be no way a one-loss Buckeye team could ever reach the title game. A dominating win over Michigan a week later, made Buckeye fans somewhat forget about the loss a week earlier. After all, an outright Big Ten Championship with, at worst, a trip to the Rose Bowl is a pretty respectable season.

Fast forward a little over a week from the Michigan-Ohio State game, and somehow the Buckeyes find themselves on the cusp of headed south to the "Big Easy' to play for the national championship, jumping up the BCS ranking without even taping up an ankle. An upset win by Arkansas over LSU and a Missouri win over Kansas helped the Bucks climb from fifth to third in the current BCS standings behind only West Virginia and Missouri. In a tumultuous college football season that has seen both the number one and number two ranked team fall more often than not; I guess you could call the Buckeyes the leader in the clubhouse. While both Missouri and West Virginia are ahead of Ohio State, both also have a game to play. West Virginia travels to Pittsburgh and will not likely have any problem beating a hapless Pittsburgh team. Missouri, on the other hand, must travel to San Antonio, Texas to take on a very good Oklahoma team in the Big 12 Championship Game.

Many Ohioans will probably crawl out of bed next Saturday and put on their Ohio State shirt or hat without ever thinking twice about their actions. It may be because the basketball team plays at Butler later on that night, or it could be habit from a fall of Ohio State football. What they won't realize is the block "O" on the front of their shirt or hat will stand for a little more than it normally does.

When the Oklahoma Sooners take the Alamo Dome field this Saturday, their cheering section will be larger than normal...with Buckeyes. Ohioans won't be pulling for Oklahoma because their coach hails from Youngstown. They will be rooting for them because they are Ohio State's last chance at reaching the National Championship Game for the second time in as many years. Sooners and Buckeyes will share more than the first letter in the name of their state this Saturday, a Missouri loss will improve both teams' bowl standing. After all, Oklahoma is playing for a BCS Bowl birth.

So, this weekend live by the motto "an enemy of my enemy is my friend", wear the biggest block "O" you can find knowing it will stand for a little more than normal, raise your beer to the sky, and yell "Boomer Sooner" ...and cross your fingers.

West Virginia vs Missouri - Good For College Football

There is still a week left in both the seasons of Missouri and West Virginia and in that week Missouri has to beat a strong Oklahoma team and West Virginia has to avoid looking past Pitt. But if both teams win on Saturday they will finish #1 & #2 in the polls and the match-up for the national title would be good for college football much to the dismay of fans of others schools like Ohio State, et al who are bemoaning how they should be in the national title game even after losses to unranked opponents throughout the season and other pitfalls
